Acoustic Leak Detection vs Thermal Imaging — Which Technology Finds Leaks Better in Dubai

Two primary technologies dominate professional leak detection: acoustic analysis and thermal imaging. Each has strengths and ideal use cases. Understanding the difference helps you evaluate the service you are being offered.

Acoustic Detection (What Fix On Click Uses)

Acoustic detection listens for the sound of water escaping from pipes. The equipment includes ground microphone sensors, noise-canceling headphones, and a processing unit that displays sound frequency and amplitude as a waveform graph.

Strengths: Works through any surface material (tile, concrete, marble, soil). Detects leaks at depth — even underground pipes. Provides real-time feedback as the sensor moves. Records data for documentation. Can detect very small leaks that produce minimal temperature change.

Best for: Pressurized supply pipe leaks where water is escaping under pressure (creating detectable sound), underground pipe leaks, and leaks deep within thick walls or slabs.

Thermal Imaging

Thermal imaging detects temperature differences on surfaces using an infrared camera. Water flowing behind a wall changes the surface temperature — cold water cools the surface, hot water warms it.

Strengths: Provides an instant visual overview of large areas. Can show the water's flow path as a temperature trail. Non-contact — scans without touching the surface.

Limitations: Cannot detect leaks deep within thick concrete walls where the temperature change does not reach the surface. Less effective when ambient temperature matches the water temperature. Does not work well on surfaces with inconsistent temperature (near windows, exterior walls).

Best for: Shallow leaks close to the surface, mapping the extent of water spread, and quick visual assessment.

Which is Better?

Neither is universally better. They answer different questions. Acoustic detection asks "where is the sound coming from?" — it finds the leak SOURCE. Thermal imaging asks "where is the temperature different?" — it finds the water's EFFECT.

For most hidden pipe leaks in Dubai apartments, acoustic detection is the primary tool for pinpointing the source. Thermal imaging is an excellent complement for mapping how far the water has spread from the source.

Fix On Click uses professional PQWT acoustic detection as our primary leak detection method across Dubai.
