Glass Types Used in Dubai Homes — Which One Is Right for Each Application

Not all glass is the same. The glass used in a shower enclosure is fundamentally different from the glass in a window, which is different from the glass in a partition wall. Understanding the types of glass used in residential applications helps you make informed decisions when glass needs to be replaced or installed.
Tempered Safety Glass Tempered glass is standard glass that has been heated to approximately 620 degrees Celsius and then rapidly cooled. This process creates internal compression that makes the glass four to five times stronger than regular glass. When tempered glass breaks, it fractures into small blunt granules rather than sharp shards. This safety characteristic is why building codes in Dubai require tempered glass for doors, shower enclosures, glass railings, and any glass installation where human contact is likely. Applications in Dubai homes include sliding door panels, shower enclosures, glass balcony railings, glass table tops, and any glass within 90 centimeters of floor level. Limitation: tempered glass cannot be cut, drilled, or modified after tempering. All cutting and hole-drilling must be done before the tempering process. This means replacement panels must be custom ordered to exact dimensions. Laminated Safety Glass Laminated glass consists of two or more glass layers bonded together with a plastic interlayer, typically PVB (polyvinyl butyral). When laminated glass breaks, the plastic interlayer holds the broken pieces together, maintaining the panel's structure. This is the same technology used in car windshields. The glass may crack but does not fall apart, maintaining a barrier even when broken. Applications include floor-to-ceiling windows in high-rise apartments, glass railings and balustrades, overhead glass installations like skylights, and security glass applications. In Dubai high-rise apartments, building regulations may require laminated glass for certain window positions, particularly at heights where wind pressure is significant. Double Glazed Units Double glazed glass consists of two glass panels separated by a sealed air or gas-filled gap. This gap provides thermal insulation, reducing heat transfer through the window. In Dubai, where summer temperatures regularly exceed 45 degrees, double glazing significantly reduces the heat entering through windows. This improves AC efficiency and reduces electricity consumption. The sealed gap also provides sound insulation, which is valuable in apartments facing busy roads. When a double glazed unit fails, moisture enters the sealed gap and condenses between the panels, creating a permanent foggy or misty appearance. This is called failed seal or blown unit. The entire double glazed unit must be replaced when the seal fails. Frosted and Obscure Glass Frosted glass has a textured surface that allows light through while obscuring the view. It is created by acid etching or sandblasting clear glass. Applications include bathroom windows, shower enclosures where privacy is desired, glass partition walls in offices, and entrance doors with glass panels. In Dubai, frosted glass is particularly popular in bathroom settings where natural light is desired without sacrificing privacy. It is also used in office partitions to maintain light flow between spaces while providing visual separation. Tinted Glass Tinted glass has color added during manufacturing that reduces light transmission and solar heat gain. Common tints include grey, bronze, green, and blue. In Dubai, tinted glass is used in windows and doors to reduce glare and heat from direct sunlight. The solar heat reduction varies by tint level but can be significant, particularly for west-facing windows that receive intense afternoon sun. Mirror Glass Mirrors are glass panels with a reflective metallic coating applied to one surface. Standard silver-backed mirrors are used for bathroom mirrors, wardrobe doors, and decorative applications. In Dubai's humid bathroom environments, the mirror coating can deteriorate over time, showing black spots or edge darkening. Copper-free mirrors offer better moisture resistance for bathroom applications. Choosing the Right Glass For any glass replacement or installation, specify the glass type based on the application. Safety glass, either tempered or laminated, is mandatory for doors, shower enclosures, railings, and low-level panels. Double glazing should be specified for windows where energy efficiency matters. Frosted glass for privacy applications. Tinted glass for heat and glare reduction. All glass should meet UAE building code specifications for the specific application.
